On the heart of the Aegean, lays Didim, an
ancient town with magical landscape, mythological heritage and calm.
Situated on the South Western Turkey, Didim is shaped as a peninsula
surrounding Mugla on the east coast with huge inlet of Akbuk town,
Aegean sea on the west and east coast, Lake Bafa and the Menderes River
on the northern coast. 106 km's to Aydin provenience, 53 km' to Söke
town, 73 km's to Kusadasi, 110 km's to Bodrum. Spread to 300 km2. of
area. Apart from the ideal location, the town has 30 beaches around it, most of which are completely unknown to both tourists and residents alike. The natural landscape of the town brought a reputation of being one of the best places in the world for its fresh, pure and clean air. It is deemed as being very healthy for older people and those with certain illnesses such as asthma. Indeed, the area of the Aegean Coast has found its fame in an ancient history. In the words of Heredotus, the Aegean coasts "have the most beautiful sky and the best climate in the world." Didim was little known to foreigner and local residents alike till 1980ies. Foreigners started to discover Didim as a tourist resort from as far back as 1985, when it was little more then a beach and village, with few traditional restaurants dotted along the sea front. Though, by word of mouth and the advent of tourism it has gradually become more well-known. As the tour operators jumped on the band wagon and advertisings of Didim as a holiday hotspot and the number of people visiting Didim has increased dramatically, pawing the way of the town becoming one of the most popular holiday destinations in Turkey. Today's Didim as rapidly growing holiday resort completely different than what it used to be 10-15 years ago welcoming large population of tourists with its beautiful beaches, ancient towns, culture, climate from all over the world. But comparing to the big tourist resorts like Bodrum, Kusadasi it's not been spoiled. Local market of Didim is held on Saturdays can be visit by local transport between Altinkum - town centre, runs in every 5 minutes or take a walk for 25 minutes. You can discover the beaches, natural coves and bays by boat trips better, organized daily from the harbor in summer season which starts beginning of May. Water sports, diving courses and fishing tours are also available. Didim itself very close to ancient towns and natural wonders comparing to most of the holiday resorts of Turkey. You can discover the area itself by local travel agents who have organised tours to Lake Bafa, Akköy village, Didyma - Miletos - Priene, Söke Market, Kusadasi Market, Bodrum, Ephesus - Virgin Mary's house, Pamukkale, Aphrodisias, Dalyan, etc... Beaches and nature: Didim boasts over 30 beaches and beauty spots galore. Many of the beaches are little more then private secluded bays, but they are there all the time. Altinkum, which is the part of Didim situated on southern cost of the town is the area where all main beaches are situated. In fact, the people are more familiar with the name Altinkum rather then Didim. Altinkum is a friendly resort and you will find the locals 'laid back' and relaxed in their attitude towards tourists. You will get to know them quickly and they will enjoy nothing better than chatting over a glass of Turkey's famous apple tea. Don't be surprised if you return year after year to visit your newfound friends! The main beach in Altinkum (often referred to as Main Beach) is a large bay of golden sand with incredibly shallow waters and therefore it is very popular. There are a couple of other sandy bays, the one to the left-hand side is broken by a headland but can be accessed by the beachfront promenade. Watersports are plentiful here so there is always something to watch or participate in. Being one of the largest sandy beaches in the whole of Turkey, “Main Beach”, with its long stretch extending into “2nd beach” attracts thousand of local and foreign tourists every year. “Third beach” is separated from the “Main beach” by much smaller Kamaci beach (often referred as second beach) and is second most popular beach in the area. All beaches offer clear, shallow, clean water, a sandy sea bend and no rocks, sharp stones or undercurrents. In fact, they are probably one of the safest beaches for swimming in Europe. Another popular beach is “Gaye Beach”. Situated in the “elite” area of Didim-Yesilkent, it is one of the most beautiful natural beaches in the area. The construction of apartment blocks is forbidden in Yesilkent and “Gaye Beach” is surrounded with unique, tastefully built villas. The abundance of greenery, natural flora and fauna and its unspoilt beaches all add to its prestige. Didim and environs is declared as “Tourism Development and Protection Region” by Turkish Tourism and Culture Ministry, due to 2634 Tourism Encouragement Act of Turkey. The beaches in Altinkum are awarded a “Blue Flag” for cleanliness and safety by the International Environmental Education Foundation. New marina is being built in Didim and the investment in different sectors of tourism by the government is well under way, including the plans of building more 4 and 5 star hotels, sea sports, golf course and others. |
